Shallow spread foundation systems are generally not considered suitable for expansive soil sites with a weighted risk factor, RFw, greater than about 0.5 to 0.75.
The following examples demonstrate that although shallow founda- tions may be suitable for sites with low values of weighted risk factor, RFw, they generally should not be used for sites with values of RFw
